Claire Lustig is a sustainable aquaculture strategist who acts as the Sustainability Director of Golden Eagle Sablefish. Golden Eagle Sablefish is a small-scale, Canadian farm raising sablefish in partnership with the Kyuquot-Checleseht First Nations. It is the world’s only sablefish farm whose flagship product is recognized as the popular Gindara Sablefish. Claire’s multi-faceted role is to strategize the long-term success of Golden Eagle Sablefish via environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Her goal is for people to have access to healthy, local fish raised simply and responsibly, by fellow Canadian farmers. She is passionate about dispelling seafood misconceptions and communicating on aquaculture’s importance as part of a sustainable food system.

Before her work at Golden Eagle Sablefish, Claire spent 7 years at the Ocean Wise Seafood Program – the sustainable seafood non-profit based out of Vancouver BC. Seafood sustainability is an ever- changing landscape of environmental standards, fluctuating species abundances and governing bodies.

Claire specialized in simplifying scientific concepts, educating, and communicating to the restaurant industry, members of the general public, and media in order to influence better seafood choices. Claire’s academic background is in fisheries. She holds a Master of Science Degree in Fisheries Biology from Simon Fraser University where her research focused on the survival of wild sockeye salmon in River’s Inlet, BC, and a Technical Diploma in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture from Vancouver Island University. Having experience with both wild and farmed fish, she benefits from a holistic view of the seafood landscape.

Claire currently works out of Calgary, AB and has close ties to BC. When she is not at work, she enjoys local restaurants, cooking and hiking.
